Lychee bloom panicle
Lychee blooms develop as a panicle. The bloom in this photo is an early one. On close examination it can be observed that the only flowers open are male characterized by the several stamen surrounding the flower top. Slightly later in the season the female flowers will mature. These are characterized by a small ovary topped by a single pistil. When fertilized the ovary develops into the lychee fruit.
