This panicle displays many opened male flowers. Typically the male flowers open first followed by the females. the male flower can be distinguished by the presence of six pollen bearing stamen. The female flowers are characterized by the presence of a single pistillate surface protruding above an ovary. You will note cluster of female flowers in the upper left hand side of the photo.
